If male ferrets (hobs) are castrated they usually smell much less than uncastrated, and are therefore more pleasant to live with. Female ferrets (jills) can be spayed to prevent pregnancy and the serious anaemia that can develop in entire females. Where a number of ferrets are kept as pets, it is often a good idea to have one male ferret vasectomised, as female ferrets (jills) can become seriously anaemic in the springtime if they are not mated. Vasectomised males will mate with the females without making them pregnant.
